Our Tūpuna
The people of Pariroa Pā
We are Ngāti Ruanui, and our five hapū — Ngāti Tūpito, Ngāti Ringi, Ngāti Hine, Kotuku and Tuatahi.
Our pā was founded in 1894 by Tūtange Waionui on the whenua of Te Pukeatua. Taiporohēnui wharenui has stood at the heart of our marae since 1890 , and the whenua beneath us was granted to the founding hapū by the Crown in 1895.
Today, our kōhanga reo nurtures the reo of the pā's mokopuna, and the marae continues to gather the people for tangihanga, hui, wānanga and community events.

Our Direction
Pariroa Pā 2050
Where this marae is heading — set out in our intergenerational plan, adopted 2026.
By 2050, Pariroa Pā Marae will be a thriving, self-sustaining, climate-resilient, reo-rich marae that continues to nurture the descendants of Ngāti Tūpito, Ngāti Ringi, Ngāti Hine, Kotuku and Tuatahi. Pariroa Pā will stand as a place where tikanga flourishes, whānau return home, mātauranga is protected, and future generations are empowered to lead.
